Preko is the administrative and transport heart of the island of Ugljan, sitting directly across the channel from the historic city of Zadar. Its name literally means "across," and it offers a perfect blend of authentic Dalmatian village life and modern Mediterranean charm.
History & Description
Preko’s history is defined by its relationship with the mainland. While Zadar was a fortified city, Preko was where Zadar’s noble families built their summer villas (many of which still line the quay).
The "Lavandijere": A unique part of Preko’s social history is the story of the prieske lavandijere—local women who worked as laundresses for Zadar's wealthy families, crossing the channel in rowing boats to deliver clean linen.
Architecture: The old center is a maze of typical Dalmatian stone houses and narrow alleys (kale), while the waterfront is a lively promenade lined with cafes and small marinas.
Typical Foods
The cuisine here is "Blue-Green"—a mix of fresh seafood and island-grown produce.
Ugljan Tuna: The island is famous for its tuna farming and high-quality bluefish.
Peka: A traditional slow-cooked dish of lamb or octopus with potatoes, roasted under a bell-like lid covered in embers.
Olive Oil: Ugljan is known as the "Olive Island," and the oil produced here is some of the best in Croatia.
Local Treats: Look for Pršut (cured ham), local goat cheese, and Fritule (small fried doughnuts) often served during festivals.
Activities & Nature
Preko is an outdoor playground for those who love the sea and hiking.
Fortress of St. Michael (Sveti Mihovil): A 13th-century Venetian fortress sitting 265m above the town. It offers the best panoramic view of the Zadar archipelago (over 200 islands).
Galevac Islet (Školjic): Only 80 meters from the shore, this tiny, lush island is home to a 15th-century Franciscan monastery. You can even swim to it or take a traditional wooden rowing boat.
Beaches: Jaz Beach is the most popular, known for its shallow sandy bottom and "Blue Flag" status, making it perfect for families.
Cycling & Hiking: The island is crisscrossed with trails through ancient olive groves that lead to hidden bays on the "wilder" southern side of the island.
Shops & Markets
While small, Preko has everything you need for a comfortable stay:
The Market: Located near the ferry port, this is where you buy seasonal fruits, vegetables, and local olive oil directly from the producers.
Fish Market: Fresh catch arrives daily; get there early (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM) to snag the best sea bream or squid.
Supermarkets: There are several Konzum and Sonika stores for general groceries and "The Bure" shop near the dock for summer essentials.
Festivals (2026 Season)
Summer in Preko is vibrant, with many events celebrating local heritage:
Priješka Legrica (August 8th): The main town festival featuring live music, local food stalls, and traditional games.
Vecer priješke kužine (August 22nd): A dedicated "Night of Preko Cuisine" where you can taste authentic island recipes.
Ugljan Olive Days (Late June): A celebration of the island’s liquid gold with tastings and workshops.
Preko–Zadar Swimming Marathon: A famous annual race where athletes and amateurs swim across the channel.
